Treesearch Help

This document describes how to use Treesearch search engine. Treesearch is a tool that provides US Forest Service Research and Development scientists' publications online. The search engine allows searches of terms or portions of words occurring in: titles, abstracts, keywords, Strategic Program Areas (SPAs), author's last name, national R&D Taxonomy, name of a PDF file, and Experimental Forests and Ranges (EFR).

Basic Search for on-line publications

This section provides a way to perform a simple search. The basic search fields are: All Fields, Last name of author, Title, and Date Range.

All Fields: Enter the words and/or phrases to filter. Phrases should be delimited by double quotes, an example being "woody biomass". Wildcard symbols such as * or % are not supported at this time.

Last name of author: Enter the last name of the author to filter by. It can be a partial or complete spelling. Wildcard symbols such as * or % are not supported at this time.

Title: : Enter words or phrases from the title. A partial or complete spelling is permitted. Phrases should be enclosed in double quotes such as "wood handbook". Wildcard symbols such as * or % are not supported.

Date Range: Select either "All Years" or a range of publication years to limit the results.

Navigation:

  • Select "Search" to begin the search.
  • Select "Clear" to clear the fields and enter new search filters.
  • Select one of the breadcrumb options to navigate to other screens.

This section provides a way to perform advanced search options. The basic fields are used as well as additional fields including: Station, Publication Series, and Volume number.

All Fields: Enter the words and/or phrases to filter. Phrases should be delimited by double quotes, an example being "woody biomass". Wildcard symbols such as * or % are not supported at this time.

Last name of author: Enter the last name of the author to filter by. It can be a partial or complete spelling. Wildcard symbols such as * or % are not supported at this time.

Publication Series: Select a publication series from the drop-down list. The Publication Series options are:

Searching for Station Series Publications

This section provides for a quick way to search for publications if the publication type and/or volume number are available. At least one field needs to be filled out in order to perform the search.

First drop-down list: Select a Publication Series to filter by. The Publication Series options are:

Searching by Strategic Program Areas (SPA)

Forest Service Research & Development (R&D) conducts highly integrated research at different scales to address problems of environmental and social concern. One way the agency internally organizes this research is by Strategic Program Areas. Below is a listing of them to help search by these categories. Clicking on a SPA name will initiate a search for you, or just enter that phrase in the All Fields search field:

Invasive SpeciesReduces, minimizes, or eliminates the introduction, establishment, spread, and effects of invasive species.
Inventory, Monitoring & AnalysisIdentifies current status and trends of forests; their management options and effects; and the threats and their associated effects on the Nation's forests and grasslands species.
Outdoor RecreationExamines Seeks to understand and manage outdoor environments, activities, and experiences that connect people with the natural world.
Resource Management & UseExplores forest and range resources and products, including agroforestry, forest products, landscape science, management & operations, and urban research.
Water, Air & SoilEnables clear air and safe drinking water, protection of lives and property from wildfire and smoke, and adapting to climate variability and change.
Wildland Fire & FuelFocuses on reducing the negative and enhancing the beneficial effects of fire.
Wildlife & FishInvestigates the complex interactions among species, ecosystem dynamics and processes, land use and management, and emerging threats.

Search Results

Screen shot of Treesearch search results Whether a basic, advanced, or publication series search is done, the results columns will display are:

  • Publication Year
  • Title
  • Authors
  • Source

Sorting: Results can be sorted by clicking on any of the column titles. Clicking on one of the column titles again sorts in the reverse order.

Navigation: Navigating through the search results can be done in a number of ways.

  • Selecting a number that is displayed at the top will navigate to a certain page.
  • Clicking ">" will navigate to the next page.
  • Clicking "<" will navigate to the previous page.
  • Clicking "Last >" will navigate to the last page.
  • Clicking "< First" will navigate to the first page.

Moving the mouse over "search criteria" link will display the search criteria whose results are displayed. To edit the current search, click on the "edit this search" link found at the top of the page. The Advanced Search page will display.

Select a Publication to view

To select a publication, click on the title. The publication information will be displayed. The following information will be displayed:

  • Title
  • Author
  • Date
  • Source
  • Description
  • Keywords
  • Publication Notes
  • Citation

The "Keywords" field will provide a list of keywords that are hyperlinked. If one of the keywords is clicked, a new search will be performed looking for publications with that particular keyword.

The "View or Print this Publication" is hyperlinked to the actual publication. This will allow the user to view or print the publication.
