Description: This study summarizes the successional development and testing of forest hydrologic models based on DRAINMOD that predicts the hydrology of low-gradient poorly drained watersheds as affected by land management and climatic variation. The field scale (DRAINLOB) and watershed-scale in-stream routing (DRAINWAT) models were successfully tested with water table and outflow data from a 25 ha, 340 ha, 2950 ha forested watersheds and an 8 140 ha mixed land use watershed in North Carolina (NC), USA. Results of linking DRAINWAT with a simple in-stream nitrogen transport model with a first order decay rate indicated its potential use as a tool for estimating N losses from the poorly drained coastal watersheds.
