Description: United States’ pulpwood production amounted to 89.2 million cords in 2008. Roundwood production totaled 63.0 million cords and accounted for 71 percent of the Nation’s total pulpwood production. The use of wood residue totaled 26.2 million cords. Georgia led the Nation in total production, with 11.6 million cords. In 2008, 146 mills were operating and drawing wood from 38 of the lower 48 States. Pulping capacity for the Nation totaled 171,377 tons per day. Pulping capacity of southern mills totaled 124,679 tons per day in 2008, and accounted for 73 percent of the Nation’s pulping capacity.
