Title: Ecological genetics of the Bromus tectorum (Poaceae) - Ustilago Bullata (Ustilaginaceae): A role for frequency dependent selection?

Author: Meyer, Susan E.; Nelson, David L.; Clement, Suzette; Ramakrishnan, Alisa

Date: 2010

Source: American Journal of Botany. 97(8): 1304-1312.

Publication Series: Not categorized

Description: Evolutionary processes that maintain genetic diversity in plants are likely to include selection imposed by pathogens. Negative frequency-dependent selection is a mechanism for maintenance of resistance polymorphism in plant - pathogen interactions. We explored whether such selection operates in the Bromus tectorum - Ustilago bullata pathosystem. Gene-for-gene relationships between resistance and avirulence loci have been demonstrated for this pathosystem.

Keywords: balanced polymorphism, Bromus tectorum, cheatgrass, frequency-dependent selection, gene-for-gene model, head smut disease, Poaceae, resistance, Ustilaginaceae, Ustilago bullata, virulence
