Title: From diagnostics to metagenomics: Applications of DNA-based tools in forest pathology

Author: Ross-Davis, Amy L.; Kim, Mee-Sook; Stewart, Jane E.; Hanna, John W.; Shaw, John D.; Klopfenstein, Ned B.

Date: 2013

Source: In: Browning, John; Palacios, Patsy, comps. Proceedings of the 60th Annual Western International Forest Disease Work Conference; October 8-12 October 2012; Tahoe City, CA. Fort Collins, CO: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Forest Health Technology and Enterprise Team. p. 91-99.

Publication Series: Paper (invited, offered, keynote)

Description: Advances in molecular technology provide an accessible set of tools to 1) help forest pathologists detect, identify, and monitor forest pathogens, 2) examine the evolutionary relationships and global distributions of forest pathogens and their hosts, 3) assess the diversity and structure of host and pathogen populations, and 4) evaluate the structure and function of genes, as well as their levels of expression, within species and within communities. This paper briefly outlines DNA-based tools, including molecular diagnostics, phylogenetics, population genetics, genomics, and metagenomics, and discusses how each has been or could be applied in the field of forest pathology.

Keywords: DNA, forest pathogens, molecular diagnostics, phylogenetics, population genetics, genomics, and metagenomics
