Description: The USDA Forest Service ?cares for the land and serves the people? under the framework of the Natural Resources Agenda (Watershed Health and Restoration; Sustainable Forest Ecosystems; Recreation; and Forest Roads). The National Forests comprise only 19 percent of the forestland (land that is at least 10% covered with trees) in the United States. The Forest Service has interest and programs for almost all forestland in the US. For it is private forest landowners, not the Forest Service, and not forest industry, who owns most (59%) of our nation?s timberlands (timberland is defined as those forestlands capable of producing 20 cu. ft./acre/year and is not withdrawn from timber utilization by statute or regulation).
