Description: This article is intended to encourage those planning to conduct meso- or microscale weather studies to supplement their sophisticated observing techniques and equipment- with low-cost observations taken by volunteers. Such observations can often show high benefits per unit costs in expanding the geographical area of study, increasing the density of observations, or in verifying the validity of urban study findings. Techniques used in recruiting and sustaining the 300-station volunteer Washington, D.C., Network are described.
