Description: Growth management and Smart Growth initiatives in the United States represent an ongoing process of growth accommodation. Because growth by definition constitutes unsustainable behavior in that it is incapable of being continued or maintained indefinitely, ongoing growth accommodation must be recognized as activity incongruous with advancing the goal of ecological sustainability. This paper portrays the growth-accommodation practices that make up growth management and Smart Growth initiatives today; considers the magnitudes of ongoing demographic, economic, and urban growth destined to nullify those initiatives; and suggests alternative growth management endeavors to further ecological sustainability.
