Title: Reforestation of strip-mined lands in West Virginia

Author: Potter, H. Spencer; Weitzman, Sidney; Trimble, George R., Jr. Jr.;

Date: 1951

Source: Station Paper NE-43. Upper Darby, PA: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Northeastern Forest Experiment Station. 28 p.

Publication Series: Science Perspectives (SP)

Description: The early 1940's witnessed a striking increase in strip-mining throughout the eastern coal region. West Virginia, with its extensive coal resources, naturally was caught in the full current of this shift in mining methods. Today the raw gash on the hillside - almost infallibly the mark of a strip-mine operation - is a familiar sight in the State.
