Description: There are few places in the world where wildfire behavior can be studied strictly as it is affected by weather variables, both ambient and fire-induced. Eastern North Carolina offers this opportunity. Large, homogeneous expanses of highly combustible fuel exist on land that has a maximum elevation of 10 ft. (3 m) above mean sea 1evel. Fine fuel weights of 15 tons/acre (33.6 M.T./ha) are common, and under extreme drought conditions these fuel weights may more than double as the peat soils, characteristic of this region, dry to depths of 1 to 2 ft. (0.3 to 0.6 m.).
