Title: Effects of soil compaction on residual stand growth in central Appalachian hardwood forest: a preliminary case study

Description: A preliminary study that quantified the impacts of soil compaction on residual tree growth associated with ground-based skidding traffic intensity and turn payload size was investigated in the central Appalachian hardwood forest. The field study was carried out on a 20-acre tract of the West Virginia University Research Forest. Skid trails were laid out in 170' - 200' sections, which allowed for one 5O' treatment and two 50' replications of each treatment over the total skid trail. Treatments were arranged in a 3x3 factorial with three payload sizes of unloaded, half capacity, and full capacity and the number of loaded machine passes set at 1, 3, and 5.
