Date: 1992

Publication Series: General Technical Report (GTR)

Description: The USDA Forest Service and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have launched a joint program to monitor the health of forests iu the United States. The program is still in the initial phases of implementation, but several indicators of forest health are undergoiug development and permanent plots have been established in 12 States. This report contains an initial summary of data gathered during 1991 in Alabama, Georgia, and Virginia. Simple percentage distributions of crown and damage data from the sample plots do not indicate any unusual or unexplained problems in these three States. About 99 percent of the trees sampled had crown ratings of average or better. A synopsis of supplemental forest pest data in the Southern Region shows that traditional pests continue to cause substantial damage.

Keywords: Forest health monitoring, forest damage assessment, visual crown rating
