Description: Non-timber forest product (NTFP) certification is a market mechanism that is advanced to attain the dual goals of protecting global forests and promoting economic development (Nepstad and Schwartzman, 1992; Pierce, 1999; Viana et al, 1996). Certification criteria and indicators emphasize the rationalization and control of each step of the NTFP process from forest to consumer. The creation of markets for items produced through such systems is a central focus of the strategy. There is a danger, however, that these very processes may undermine the achievement of certification goals, particularly those aimed at social equity and the protection of subsistence uses.
