Stumpage and roadside prices increased overall from 1964 to 1983. Roadside prices increased at a slower rate than stumpage prices. Real sawtimber prices increased for all species except hemlock during the period. Red oak prices increased at the greatest rate. Hardwood-pulpwood stumpage prices increased over the study period while spruceifir and other softwood- pulpwood stumpage prices decreased in real terms. For the 20- year period, harvest cost for sawtimber decreased in real terms while the harvest cost for pulpwood increased less than 1 percent.
