Title: Tracking elk hunters with the Global Positioning System

Author: Lyon, L. Jack; Burcham, Milo G.;

Date: 1998

Source: Res. Pap. RMRS-RP-3. Ogden, UT: U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station. 6 p

Publication Series: Research Paper (RP)

Description: Global Positioning System (GPS) units were used to record hunter locations at 15 second intervals during elk hunting expeditions. This information allowed us to examine the influence of roads on hunter behavior, and along with associated time and distance data, provide a solid foundation on which a hunter density and elk vulnerability model can be developed.

Keywords: behavior, Cervus elaphus, GPS, Montana, vulnerability
