Title: New insights into the ligninolytic capability of a wood decay ascomycete

Author: Shary, Semarjit; Ralph, Sally A.; Hammel, Kenneth E.;

Date: 2007

Source: Applied and environmental microbiology. Vol. 73, no. 20 (Oct. 2007): Pages 6691-6694.

Publication Series: Miscellaneous Publication

Description: Wood-grown cultures of Daldinia concentrica oxidized a permethylated [beta]-14C- labeled synthetic lignin to 14CO2 and also cleaved a permethylated [alpha]-13C-labeled synthetic lignin to give C[alpha]-C[beta] cleavage products that were detected by 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry. Therefore, this ascomycete resembles white-rot basidiomycetes in attacking the recalcitrant nonphenolic structures that predominate in lignin.

Keywords: Biodegradation, deterioration, microbial metabolism, fungi, biotechnology, carbon dioxide, wood-decaying fungi, lignin, Ascomycetes, industrial applications, oxidases, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, DHP, soft rot, cleavage, decay, decay fungi, Daldinia concentrica
