Author: Williams, R. Sam;

Date: 2009

Source: Third International Coating Wood and Wood Composites Conference : durable and sustainable--today and beyond: proceedings, September 22-23, 2009 ... Charlotte, NC. [Plymouth Meeting, PA] : NPCA/FSCT, 2009: 28 p.

Description: A brief history of paint research at the Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) in Madison, Wisconsin, sets the stage for a discussion of testing paint on wood and wood products. Tests include laboratory and outdoor tests, and I discuss them in terms of several degradation mechanisms (loss of gloss and fading, mildew growth, extractives bleed, and cracking, flaking, and peeling). The paper is not a review of standard tests, but rather a summary of my opinions and recommendations for focusing tests to obtain specific information on finish performance on wood.

Keywords: Paint, deterioration, coatings, testing, finishes, finishing, weathering, research, commercial products, paint industry, trade, protective coatings industry, service life, wood anatomy, wood-decaying fungi, biodegradation, mildew, molds, durability, exposure tests, forest products laboratories, product testing, review article, decay fungi, wood extractives
