Title: Forest resources of Mississippi’s national forests, 2006

Author: Oswalt, Sonja N.;

Date: 2011

Source: e-Resour. Bull. SRS–170. Asheville, NC: U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, Southern Research Station. 33 p.

Publication Series: Resource Bulletin (RB)

Description: This bulletin describes forest resource characteristics of Mississippi’s national forests, with emphasis on DeSoto National Forest, following the 2006 survey completed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, Forest Inventory and Analysis program. Mississippi’s national forests comprise > 1 million acres of forest land, or about 7 percent of all forest land in the State, and contain nearly 11 percent of the State’s standing live-tree biomass. National forests in Mississippi are dominated by softwood species, including ecologically important longleaf pine ecosystems. Compared with other public as well as private forests in the State, Mississippi’s national forests are older, contain bigger trees, experience fewer removals but higher mortality levels, and contain a larger number of standing dead trees.

Keywords: DeSoto National Forest, FIA, forest inventory, Mississippi, Mississippi national forests
