Title: Deriving Biomass Estimation Equations for Seven Plantation Hardwood Species

Author: Schlaegel, Bryce E.; Kennedy, Harvey E.;

Date: 1986

Source: In: Rockwood, Donald L., ed. Proceedings of the 1985 Southern Forest Biomass Workshop; 1985 June 11-14; Gainesville, FL. Gainesville, FL: Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, University of Florida; 1986: 31-39.

Publication Series: Paper (invited, offered, keynote)

Description: Trees of seven species sampled from a plantation over 7 years were used to derive weight equations to predict primary tree components. The seven species required the use of five different model forms to insure the greatest precision. Regardless of model form, all equations include variables for tree diameter, tree height, age, and number of trees planted. The most precise estimates are found by deriving a separate model and equation for each dependent variable of interest. The modeling effort can be reduced by deriving a single model form for each species. fitting this model to the primary components and finding component totals by summing predictions. While unbiased estimates are produced. prediction variances are greatly increased.
