Title: Forest pathology in Yap, Palau, Pohnpei, Kosrae, Guam and Saipan, Sept. 2013

Author: Cannon, Phil;

Date: 2014

Source: Trip Report. Vallejo, CA: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Region 5, Forest Health Protection. p. 114.

Publication Series: Miscellaneous

Description:

In September of 2013, an opportunity was seized by the Regional Forest Pathologist to do some work on the following islands in Micronesia and the Marianas: Yap, Palau, Guam, Saipan, Pohnpei, and Kosrae. The principle justification for doing the work at this time was that satellite images showed large areas of dead mangroves on Yap (Liu, pers. com). Many parties wanted to know the cause of this extensive dieback. However, it is a long and expensive trip to Yap, so it was decided to couple the investigation of this mangrove problem with several other ongoing forest pathology activities in this region. The author spent 100 hours preparing for this trip, 310 hours working and/or traveling during the 23 days of the trip; and 280 hours subsequently researching and writing this current set of reports. Another 100 professionals participated in some aspects of this project: about 50 persons for about 1-2 hours apiece; about 30 persons for about 6-8 hours apiece, about 15 persons for 10-16 hours apiece and about 15 persons for between 40 and 200 hours apiece. In sum: this was not a small undertaking.

Keywords: forest pathology, Micronesia, the Marianas, mangroves, dieback
